The score was immaculate. Every note was hit, every beat was smashed, and the audience applauded as the band played Feathers off to prison.

About the film

A birthday present, a sinister lodger.

The Wrong Trousers (1993) is Nick Park's Academy Award-winning second Wallace & Gromit short. For his birthday, Wallace receives a pair of remote-controlled “techno trousers”, built to walk Gromit for his daily exercise — but when money runs short, he takes in a lodger to help with the rent: a silent, unsettling penguin.

The new lodger is Feathers McGraw, a jewel thief in disguise, who seizes control of the techno trousers while Wallace sleeps and marches him through a night-time break-in at the local museum to steal a prized diamond, framing Gromit in the process. The film's climax — a model railway chase built through every room of the house — is one of stop-motion animation's most celebrated set-pieces.

It won the 1994 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film and the BAFTA for Best Short Film, and remains, alongside A Grand Day Out, one of the two films the KNDS Fairey Band brings to the stage with a live score.

Since premiering this production at Stockport Plaza in July 2022, the band has taken The Wrong Trousers to venues across the country, including Durham Brass Festival, Perth Festival of the Arts, the RNCM, Bradford's St George's Hall, Snape Maltings, Woolwich Works, Lichfield Cathedral and Ormskirk Parish Church.

The live score

Arranged by Fairey players.

The score was arranged for brass band by Fairey players James Parkinson and Rebecca Lundberg.

Julian Nott’s score uses recurring musical ideas — leitmotifs — to guide the story. The Techno Trousers have their own jaunty, mechanical theme, while Feathers McGraw is shadowed by a spare, menacing four-note theme in a minor key, its apparent simplicity hinting at the danger underneath.

In the Gromit Leaves Home scene featured below, the familiar Wallace & Gromit theme returns at a slower, more tender pace, transforming the series’ jaunty signature into one of the film’s most affecting moments. The brass-band arrangement keeps each of these themes clear as the mood moves from comedy to heartbreak, suspense and the final train chase.
